Renovations That Your Home May Need Before A Hurricane

by Cindy Cassuto 07/28/2019

The occurrence of a hurricane is like most other severe weather; it can be predictable. On some occasions though, hurricanes come in fast and furious. For those areas which have to face seasonal storms, it becomes necessary to renovate and build their homes based on the need for additional protection.

If you are looking for a constructive way to renovate your home in such a way that it is hurricane protected, you can do so with the help of the following tips.

First, design the house in such a way that it becomes ready for storms at a moment's notice. If you happen to be deciding how you can redesign your home, consider the following:

Roof structures are easily blown away by the winds. Consider installing roofing tie-downs. These are also known as "hurricane straps" for your roof. Not every roof type needs tie-downs, but discuss them with your professional roofing contractor. A tie-down helps brace your roof during very high winds and severe storms. To prepare your roof for hurricane season, research the idea of investing in hurricane straps if your home needs them. It may seem like extra work, but a small addition to your roof might mean a big addition to your home value.

Second, reinforce all the doors. Your garage door is particularly weak when it comes to intense hurricane winds, so it requires reinforcement. It is essential always to keep that in mind as you renovate your home.

Third, you need to create a backup system for your home. You may already have a proper drainage system and a pump system, but once they break down, you may have to face the consequences. With that, check out placing a redundancy in the systems.

Finally, find a way to force water flow away from the house. You need to inspect your home first to see the direction of the water flow. Then, add French drains or other drainage mechanisms to force water away from the house.

With the above information, not only does the property become hurricane ready, but it also becomes prepared to face a sale with an increase in value. A house that is ready to face any adversity sells.

Ask a real estate agent about the possible ways you can do this and make sure you stick to whatever tips you may get.
